JOB DESCRIPTION


Formed in 1997, the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) regulates Ontario’s travel agencies, booking websites and tour operators. TICO administers the Travel Industry Act, 2002 on behalf of the Ontario government.

As a consumer protection organization, TICO facilitates a consumer complaints process and administers the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund. By booking travel with a TICO registered company, consumers have access to added protection.

This is a contract position. TICO offers a hybrid working environment. The current expectation would be for the successful candidate to work onsite at TICO’s office in Mississauga 1 or 2 days per week and offsite from home for the remainder of the week. TICO’s typical working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though this role is flexible.

Job purpose                                            

 
The Accounting Assistant is a support role for the Accounting Manager and will assist daily with all accounting aspects of TICO’s books and records. The role will include journal entries, reconciliations, reporting and some routine financial analysis. In addition, the Accounting Assistant may be involved in various procedures associated with TICO’s banking requirements. While the role will be under the supervision of the Accounting Manager, it is expected that the individual will interact with employees from all departments.

 Duties and responsibilities                   

 
·       Assists with implementation of new finance and accounting applications to improve the current processes.
·       Asist with implementation of new fee billing processes.
·       Prepares adjusting journal entries.
·       Prepares cheque deposit for various sources of revenues.
·       Liaises with other departments to facilitate inflow of financial information in an orderly manner.
·       Assists with additional accounting related tasks, as required, including those related to registrants.
·       Prepares supporting working papers.
·       Follows company’s internal controls; assists and supports maintenance of strong financial controls.
·       Assist in performing reconciliations of bank accounts, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
·       Assists with additional finance-related tasks, as required, including those related to registrants.
·       Seeks ways for continuous improvement.
·       Supports various finance department projects.

Qualifications                                              

 
·       An accounting certificate desirable.
·       Proficiency in QuickBooks, QuickBooks Online desirable.
·       Has some analytical skills, identifies root causes of problems.
·       Review source documentation for accrual purposes (e.g., invoice).
·       Demonstrated standard of professionalism.
·       Possesses excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
·       Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
·       Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
·       Ability to execute on deliverables in a deadline driven environment.
·       Proficient computer skills including Microsoft office, Word, Excel, outlook applications.

Working conditions                                   

 
·       Documentation is a key component of the role, and a significant amount of time involves data capture on a laptop/desktop.
